The next generation that is involved with this sport is going to be an incredible sight to see. From the players, to the staff, it is going to be something special to be a part of. The game continues to grow across the world and with investment being made in both the men's and women's game. There is a vision on how teams want to develop. Most coaches will have an idea of what needs to be built and how to get the most out of their players. Most players will physically be talented enough to endure the demands of the game. But, what is holding it back now?
I have been fortunate enough to watch other countries develop their players with proper support from top to bottom. There is an actual system in place that promotes player, coach, and team development. Not everywhere is perfect, but there is support from club and country. What I loved about learning from other places is how they operate. Being at Derby County FC in England, opened my eyes to what support looks like. I have been several times to their training facility, but recently they have gone all in with their women's program. A brand new training ground dedicated to their program on top of great coaches who care for their players. The squad that we faced was an extremely talented group who played for one another. Technically sound, disciplined with tactics, and still had the freedom to be creative. Professional on and off the field. It is something that you'd envision for any type of program.
The next generation is already better than most of the players who came before them. They have more resources and inspiration readily available with coaches that understand the progression of players at each age. They are able to watch professionals train on social media, as well as watching them perform in matches anywhere in the world. The ability to become educated in this game is directly at our fingertips. One of the major issues that we have in this country though is the support. Everyone wants to do their own thing instead of coming together. It seems to be a power trip. Imagine if US Soccer came out with an actual structure of putting one platform out for clubs to follow. Get rid of the “ABC” leagues that are run by independent entities. Introduce a relegation and promotion system with the guidance of how to truly find a level that fits for each club/team that wants to compete. Then, have the ability to climb the ladder without money or lobbying being the influence of where you land. A model that is truly about development where you are training more than you are playing matches.
Having support from the top would put this country on the right track to compete across the globe. There are a handful of coaches that are truly focused on developing their players without the outside influence of winning. People need to work together more and get rid of the crabs in a bucket mentality. We need to get the best out of this next generation or risk being the same.
